DSC_7986One of the long-established giants of supercar design, Porsche was founded under the name Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG in 1931 in Germany. Starting out as a vehicular design consultancy, the brand was behind the unprecedented success of the Volkswagen Beetle. The first car to be launched under the company’s own name was the Porsche 64, which was released in 1939 just prior to the start of the second world war. Porsche was then heavily involved in Germany’s military efforts, designing a series of tanks up until 1945. At the close of the war, the company’s factory taken over by the British, and the founder, Ferdinand Porsche, was arrested for his part in the conflict. Still employed by the company, his son Ferry continued to oversee the company, and created the highly-acclaimed Porsche 356 before his father’s release.

Throughout the 50s and 60s, Porsche expanded into the area in which they are now known to excel – high-performance, high speed vehicle production and motor-racing. The Carrera engine, named after the company enjoyed great success during the Carrera Panamericana races, was developed in 1954 and was entirely unique to the brand, affording Porsche a whole new level of popularity. The name “Carrera” would become synonymous with a later Porsche model, but in the meantime, the Porsche 911 was being developed to meet the extreme demands of racing, and with its creation came a new physical identity for the brand. The 911 still exists following decades of re-design, and has come to be recognised as one of Porsche’s signature models.
