Replacing the 575 Maranello was always going to be a hard job for Ferrari, but when they launched the 599 GTB in 2006, they got it just right.
The big 2 seat grand tourer is styled by Pininfirina and looks fabulous. The big bonnet hides the 6.0 V12 that is based on the engine that is in the Enzo. The engine is sat right back in the bay, helping give the car a rearward weight bias. This is a design that Ferrari use with their front engined cars, it helps them feel and drive much more like a mid engined car.
The V12 produces 611bhp @ 7600rpm and 448 lb/ft @5600rpm. This is enough to propel 2 occupants and a few overnight bags to 60mph in only 3.5 seconds, and onto a top speed of 205mph.
The F1 gearbox is a joy to use, offering near instant upshifts from the steering column mounted paddles. It blips the throttle itself on the downshifts to match the engine speed, helping the V12 howl.
The car is stopped by huge carbon disks which do an amazing job, they haul the big car down from 100mph to standstill in less than 300ft.
